Full Spectrum Birthworkers is a Bay Area collective caring for the whole arc of reproductive life, from a first period through conception, pregnancy, birth, postpartum, loss, and the elder seasons beyond. Your reproductive health is the ground the rest of your life grows from. So whatever you are building, a baby, a business, a relationship, we tend that ground with you, so the foundation is cared for alongside the dream.

If you have Medi-Cal or Kaiser Permanente, doula care is part of your benefit, and we’re here to help you use it. The depth and quality of the care doesn’t change based on how it’s paid for. What does change is what your benefit authorizes and what lives outside it. This page walks you through both, so you know what to expect before you reach out.
What your benefit covers
Your doula benefit authorizes a specific scope of support across the perinatal arc: prenatal visits, birth attendance, and postpartum visits, within the limits your plan sets. Each plan sets its own visit allowances and can update them over time, so check your benefit for the current details; we’ll also confirm them with you when you reach out. Our insured-care practitioners walk with you across that arc, preparing for birth together, attending your labor, and supporting you through the early postpartum window.
Typical visits include education on what’s coming, emotional and practical support, help understanding your options, and the kind of attentive presence the clinical system isn’t built to offer. Our practitioners who work within the doula benefit are Chay, JJ, and Julie. Across the three of them, the Medi-Cal plans we work with are Alameda Alliance, Contra Costa Health Plan, Health Net, and Kaiser; Kaiser’s benefit also reaches members whose Kaiser plan isn’t Medi-Cal. They are the same FSB practitioners who serve all of our families; the care is whole.
What lives outside the benefit
Some of the practices central to FSB’s work, Closing of the Bones, womb and pelvic bodywork, lactation bodywork, babywearing instruction, and other ceremonial or somatic offerings, are not authorized under the doula benefit. This isn’t a line FSB is drawing. It’s the scope your insurer set when the benefit was designed.
These practices remain available to you as private-pay add-ons, at a fee structure we’re glad to walk you through. There’s no pressure and no assumption. Many families use their insured care exactly as authorized and never need anything else. Others choose to weave in ceremonial or bodywork pieces along the way. Both are full participation in the care we offer.

Reach out and let us know which plan you have. We’ll verify your eligibility, walk you through the intake, and route you to Chay, JJ, or Julie based on your plan, availability, and fit.

Do you accept insurance?
Yes, some of our birthworkers accept insurance. Chay, JJ, and Julie are Medi-Cal approved doulas and accept Kaiser Permanente insurance. Between them, the Medi-Cal plans they work with are Alameda Alliance, Contra Costa Health Plan, Health Net, and Kaiser, and Kaiser members are covered whether their Kaiser plan is Medi-Cal or not. What is a birthworker?
A birthworker is an umbrella term for practitioners who care for people across reproductive experiences: menstruation, conception, pregnancy, birth, postpartum, abortion, miscarriage, and beyond. Birthworkers offer emotional, physical, informational, and spiritual support.
How is a doula different from a midwife?
Midwives are licensed medical providers who oversee clinical care. Doulas are non-medical companions who provide continuous support, advocacy, comfort measures, and education.
When should I reach out to a birthworker?
Anytime you desire steadier ground, deeper preparation, or compassionate witness. That might be a painful or unpredictable cycle, the season before conceiving, pregnancy, postpartum, a loss, or any threshold in between. You don’t need to be pregnant to be held here.
Is your support medical?
Full Spectrum Birthworkers does not provide medical support. We work alongside your clinical team, honoring your choices and timelines every step of the way. For medical questions or concerns, please speak with your provider.
